Chung Dam Spa & Fitness

41 E Cheltenham Ave, Cheltenham, PA

Chung Dam Spa & Fitness is a Korean-style spa, or jjimjilbang, in the lower level of the Melrose Shopping Center on Cheltenham Avenue, right on the Philadelphia city line, run by owner Soo Yoo since the mid-2000s and long billed as the first of its kind in Pennsylvania. The bathing floors are split by gender and clothing-free, with tiled soaking tubs that step from cold to a hot tub around 103°F, a lower-body bath, and a mugwort herbal steam room; robed, the heat continues in a hot jade stone room, a hot yellow clay and charcoal room and a warm granite room around 160°F, where you stretch out on a woven mat. A full-day admission is $35 with no time limit and includes towels, gowns, shampoo and soap, a toothbrush, and even workout clothes for the attached fitness center. Plan on soaking and showering nude on your side of the spa, then moving through the stone rooms at 20 minutes a stretch. The real draw for many is the bodywork: the Korean body scrub runs $75 for men (30 minutes) and $95 for women (45 minutes), and scrub-and-massage combos, reflexology and a therapeutic massage where the therapist can walk on your back all fold in the day pass. Six-month and annual memberships are sold for regulars, and parking in the shopping-center lot is free. It is an old-school, unpolished neighborhood spa rather than a modern wellness studio, and that is its charm: a cheap, all-day soak-scrub-sweat ritual on the border of Northeast Philly, with Korean tofu houses a short drive away for after.
