Löyly Nordic Spa (Downtown SLC)
336 W Broadway, Salt Lake City, UT
Löyly Nordic Spa's downtown location on West Broadway is built around one very large Finnish sauna. The main room has three tiers of benches, seats up to 60 people, and runs on stainless steel kiuas stoves from Finland loaded with heavy stones. The target temperature is around 190 to 200°F, and pouring water on the rocks is encouraged. A smaller silent sauna seats about 20 for anyone who wants quiet. Next to them are twelve individual cold plunge tubs set at 41, 46, 51 and 56°F, each with its own filtration and no chlorine. There are no reservations and no time limits. You walk in during open hours, rotate between heat and cold as long as you like, and wear a swimsuit since the space is co-ed. A day pass is $30. Memberships start at $45 a month with a $100 annual fee, and month-to-month and multi-location plans are also available. Guests 16 and up can come on their own, and 12 to 15 year olds can come with a parent. The name comes from the Finnish word for the steam that rises when water hits the hot stones, and the whole place is designed for long, social contrast sessions rather than a quick sweat. A garage under the building handles parking downtown.
