Southampton Spa

141 Second Street Pike, Southampton, PA

Southampton Spa is a 12,000-square-foot Russian and Turkish bathhouse on Second Street Pike in Bucks County, about half an hour north of Center City and one of the few full-scale banyas in the country. The heart of it is a brick-oven Russian banya at 190°F, loaded with 16 tons of granite and steamed by attendants across three tiers of pine benches, joined by a marble-columned Turkish hammam around 170°F, a Himalayan salt sauna, an infrared room, a steam room, an 8-by-8-foot cold plunge pool at 47-55°F, a 14°F Arctic snow room, jacuzzis and a 78°F swimming pool. Admission is all day with no clock: $70 most days, $65 on Monday and Tuesday, $60 on Thursday (Ladies' Day) and $45 for children 9 to 13, with 10-visit passes and six- and twelve-month memberships for regulars. Just walk in, swimsuit on at all times, and settle into the house rhythm of three to six minutes in the banya, a one-minute plunge, then a long sit in the lounge. Robes, towels, slippers and wristband lockers are provided, children under 9 are not admitted, and anyone younger than 14 must stay with an adult. Book a platza, the oak-leaf venik massage done inside the banya, in advance. It is open 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The food is half the reason people come: a full restaurant serving borsch and hearty Russian dishes, a juice bar and herbal teas, plus a BYOB policy that turns weekend nights into long, loud group outings. A free shuttle picks up groups of seven or more within 20 miles.
