The Umstead Spa at The Umstead Hotel and Spa
100 Woodland Pond Dr, Cary, NC
The Umstead Spa is the 14,000-square-foot spa inside The Umstead Hotel and Spa, the Forbes Five-Star hotel set on a wooded lake beside SAS's campus in Cary. Beyond ten treatment rooms with coffered ceilings and drapes that open onto the grounds, each of the separate men's and women's relaxation lounges has its own dry sauna, steam room and whirlpool, and a co-ed lounge, an outdoor heated current pool and a quiet Meditation Garden with a fountain tie the space together. This is not a day-pass bathhouse: the heat is reserved for people having a treatment. Non-hotel guests get access to the sauna, steam room and whirlpool only with a booked massage or facial valued at $175 or more, and only Monday through Thursday; Friday through Sunday, holidays and special-event dates are reserved for overnight hotel guests. Book through the spa reservations team, arrive 30 minutes before your massage or facial to use the heat first, and plan for a 22% service charge added to every treatment. Guests must be 18 or older, the gender-separate lounges are clothing optional, and swimsuits are required in the co-ed pool. The spa runs 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The draw is the setting: a resort-calibre wet area with a treatment, a robe and a long, unhurried afternoon, a short drive from Raleigh and Durham. It works best as a midweek splurge or a couples' gift rather than a regular sweat.
