Alvadora Spa (Royal Palms)

5200 E Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ

Alvadora Spa is the small Mediterranean-style spa of the Royal Palms Resort, the 1920s Camelback Road estate turned hotel at the foot of Camelback Mountain, and it feels like a private villa rather than a resort complex: citrus courtyards, indoor and outdoor relaxation lounges and treatment rooms off a garden. The thermal facilities are modest and tucked into the locker rooms, a eucalyptus steam room on each of the women's and men's sides plus saunas, with an outdoor spa hot tub and a connection to the resort's heated pool and Jacuzzi. There is no cold plunge. Access is treatment-based. Alvadora does not sell a stand-alone spa pass; the resort grants full use of the spa amenities and lounges to guests who book a treatment of 50 minutes or more, and ResortPass packages a 50-minute Royal Massage or Advanced Rejuvenation Facial with a resort Day Pass from about $220 (a 20 percent service charge on the treatment is collected on site, adults only). The $45 resort Day Pass on its own covers the large pool and Jacuzzi, not the spa. The spa is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and a private Day Room (from about $299 for two, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., 21+) is sold for people who want somewhere to shower and nap between the pool and dinner. Treat this as a soak-and-steam add-on to an afternoon at one of the Valley's prettiest historic hotels rather than a contrast-therapy destination.
