Dillon's Health Spa
81 Copeland St, Quincy, MA
Dillon's Health Spa is the renovated second life of Quincy's Finland Steam Baths, the two-story brick-and-blue-clapboard bathhouse that opened on Copeland Street in 1928 to serve the Finnish quarry and shipyard workers of Brewer's Corner. Anthony Rizzo, whose mother Lisa runs the 1885 Dillon's Russian Steam Bath in Chelsea, took the old building over and rebuilt it around private rooms: Finland-style steam rooms with custom-engineered steam you dial up yourself (eucalyptus on request), dry saunas, an ultra-filtered cold plunge that sits around 44-47°F, a Vitamin C shower, and a shower in every steam room. Unlike the Chelsea original with its men's and women's days, Quincy is co-ed and private, built so a couple or a pair of friends can have a room to themselves. You book a package rather than a day pass. Package A is an hour of Finland-style steam; Package B is 75 minutes of steam, dry sauna and cold plunge (the one regulars call 'the works'); Package C splits an hour into 45 minutes of steam and 15 of dry sauna; Package D is an hour of dry sauna with a drop-in cold plunge. Packages start around $40 a person, and the spa also sells 60-minute private steam sessions and 10-minute cold plunge drop-ins through ClassPass, where it holds a 4.9 rating. Reservations are recommended because the rooms are few; book online or call ahead. It keeps short, late-week hours (Wednesday and Thursday afternoons into the evening, Friday and Saturday from early afternoon, Sunday until 4) and is closed Monday and Tuesday. Parking is on the street around the block. The draw is the price and the privacy: a clean, modern, cozy set of rooms in a century-old neighborhood bathhouse, at a fraction of what the city's new contrast studios charge, with the same family keeping the oldest steam bath in the country running ten miles north in Chelsea.
