Fire and Ice Spa opened in 2005 as the Russian Bath House of Boston and still runs as a private banya in a strip-mall unit on Eastern Avenue in Dedham, a few minutes off Route 128. There are three heat rooms, each rented privately so only your own party is inside: a traditional Russian banya at about 190°F with water thrown on the rocks for wet heat and birch and oak veniki (buy a broom for $25, or book the 'Branchman' for a proper platza beating), a dry Himalayan salt sauna at about 194°F, and a low-EMF far-infrared cabin at around 150°F. The name refers to the banya's deep heat and the cool-down that follows, which here is a shower room rather than a plunge; the business was known as Fire and Ice Cryotherapy Spa for years and cryotherapy may still be bookable, but the current site lists only saunas and massage. Everything is appointment-only, booked through Square or by phone, and priced per person: the traditional or salt sauna is $30 for 30 minutes or $40 for an hour alone, $35 an hour each for two people and $30 an hour each for three or more, with 10- and 20-hour packages for regulars. Kids 8 and under are free, 9-12 are $15, and 13+ pay full price, so it works for families as well as a group of friends on a Sunday. Robes, towels and flip-flops are provided; there is a menu of Swedish, deep-tissue, sports, Thai and reflexology massage at $60 for 30 minutes or $80 for an hour. Open from 11 a.m. (10 on weekends) until a hard 10 p.m. close, and closed Tuesdays. HSA and FSA cards are accepted, and cancellations need 24 hours' notice to avoid a 50 percent charge. This is the suburban, Russian-speaking counterpart to the city's new contrast studios: the site is bilingual, the sessions are long and unhurried, and the venik and platza traditions are offered the old way rather than as a wellness add-on.
