Restore Spa at Healthworks Cambridge

35 White St, Cambridge, MA

Restore Spa is the recovery wing of Healthworks Cambridge, the women-only fitness club a few minutes' walk from Porter Square that Healthworks has run since the 1970s and recently renovated. The spa area was rebuilt as part of that work and is the most complete of the chain's Restore Spas: a cold plunge, an infrared sauna (the only Healthworks club with infrared rather than a conventional dry sauna), a eucalyptus steam room, a whirlpool and spa showers, sitting beside a new fitness floor and the HWX studios for cycling, strength and mind-body classes. The room is run like a club spa rather than a bathhouse, with posted time limits, a shower-first rule and no phones. It is for women and non-binary members first, but you do not have to join to use it: a day pass runs about $40, and anyone who books a restorative massage gets same-day access to the spa amenities. Healthworks publishes a suggested circuit of 8-12 minutes of heat, 6-8 minutes of steam, a 5-10 minute whirlpool soak and 30-90 seconds in the plunge, repeated two or three times, which makes it an easy place to learn contrast therapy without a guide. Bring a clean bathing suit (required for the plunge and whirlpool), skip lotions and oils, and avoid 4-7 p.m. on weekdays when the club is busiest. The club is open 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends, with free parking on site.
