Kelo Spa & Steam is a wood-fired bathhouse on Centre Street in Newton Highlands built around a sauna of kelo logs, the silvered dead-standing polar pine of Finnish Lapland, shipped over whole and heated by two wood-burning stoves to 150-190°F. The sauna is run banya-style: guests ladle water onto the rocks, wear felt sauna hats against the heat and the pine resin, and book platza whisking with oak or birch on the bench inside. Beside it are a moist steam room, two cold plunges held around 34°F, showers stocked with products and an ambient lounge with the Kelo Bar for juices and organic snacks between rounds. The whole house smells of warm pine. A general admission is three hours: $69 booked online, $89 for a walk-in that is not guaranteed a spot, with robe, towel and flip-flops included. The days alternate by gender, with no swimwear required: Monday, Thursday and Sunday are men's days, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are women's, and robes, towels or swimwear must be worn in the lounge. Treatments are booked on top: a full platza is $80 (half $50), a scrub or foam wash $80, salt-and-honey glazing $100, Dead Sea mud $50-$200, with herbal tea after a platza. House rules cap each sauna or steam round at 15 minutes and total heat time at an hour, ban phones and cameras, and keep the under-13s out (13-17 must be with an adult). Weekday hours run 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 p.m.; weekends open at 7:45 a.m. Weekend evenings (6-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) are given over to private reservations: $1,000 for up to eight people for three hours, $125 a head beyond that up to 24, with the staff laying a festive table in the lounge and a juice bar, and swimwear required because these groups can be co-ed. Google reviewers, several hundred of them, rate it near 4.9 and single out the craftsmanship of the room and the heat of the steam.
