King Spa & Sauna is the big Korean jjimjilbang on Royal Lane in northwest Dallas, a 34,000-square-foot complex that has anchored the city's Koreatown spa scene since 2008. You check in for an RFID wristband, store your shoes, and change into the house uniform before heading to the co-ed floor: nine themed sauna rooms including a pink Himalayan salt dome, a pine-salt room, a hinoki cypress room, mild pyramid and oxygen rooms, heated-stone floors, a Bulgama fire room for serious heat and an Ice Room to cool off in, plus two compact steam rooms. Behind the locker-room doors the gender-separated bath halls are fully nude, with warm and hot pools, herbal tubs, a cold bath and the scrub tables where the famous Korean body scrubs happen. Outside, a co-ed pool deck has an adult pool, a jet pool, hot tubs and a swim-up bar; the old waterpark slides are reported closed for good. Admission is $50 and buys the whole day on the sauna floor, in the baths and on the pool deck; scrubs, acupressure, massages and facials are extra and charged to your wristband. The spa runs 8 a.m. to midnight every day, walk-in only, first come first served. Pack a large towel, socks, a swimsuit for the pool deck, toiletries, a hair tie and a refillable bottle (there is a free water station), and plan to eat: the food court does seafood tofu soup in stone bowls, bibimbap, boneless fried chicken and shaved ice. Families come with kids, groups rent the karaoke rooms, and a movie theater full of massage chairs is the usual place to nap between rounds. It is a well-worn institution rather than a polished one. Recent reviews praise the remodeled women's side and the variety of heat, and complain in equal measure about broken jets, tired water features and uneven cleanliness, so go for the Korean spa tradition and the sheer amount of it rather than for luxury.
