Russian Banya of Dallas
2515 E Rosemeade Pkwy, Ste 401, Carrollton, TX
Russian Banya of Dallas is the only public wood-fired banya in Texas, hidden at the back of a strip center on East Rosemeade Parkway in Carrollton and run since 2015 by Marina Pomaro, a native Russian, and her husband Mark, who bought a bathhouse that had already been steaming for a decade. The hot side is a classic three-room circuit: a wood-burning parilka that runs around 220°F with heavy humidity, a drier Finnish sauna near 180°F and a Turkish hammam at about 110°F and full steam, all opening onto a cold plunge pool that staff keep at a startling 30-32°F. Aromatherapy sessions are called on the even hours, and platza, the ritual beating with soaked oak or birch veniks, is done by appointment on the top bench. This is an all-evening, no-time-limit place rather than a quick session: a day pass is about $75 (regulars say stay long enough to make it worth it), a platza has been quoted around $35, and memberships and weekly passes are sold at the desk. You get a robe and towel at the front; bring shower slippers and a swimsuit, and expect a co-ed crowd of Russian and Eastern European regulars who will show a first-timer the rhythm of hot room, plunge, rest, repeat. Doors open Wednesday and Thursday 3 to 10 p.m., Friday 3 to 11 p.m., Saturday noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m., closed Monday and Tuesday. The lounge is also Restaurant Volga, where chef Niyara Alieva cooks Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian and Uzbek food from scratch, so a visit usually ends with khachapuri, pelmeni or kebabs and a cold beer in a bathrobe. Dallas food writers have described it as closer to a family gathering than a spa, and that is the draw: the heat is serious, the plunge is brutal and the table afterward is the point.
