Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa

16010 S Virginia St, Reno, NV

Steamboat Hot Springs Healing Center & Spa sits on the steaming geothermal field at the south end of Reno, about 15 minutes from downtown on old Highway 395. The water rises from the ground at more than 220°F and is unusually rich in silica, sulfates, magnesium and lithia, with very little of the sulfur smell people expect from a hot spring. It is cooled and piped into private tile-lined bath rooms sized for one or two, each with its own hot and cold mineral taps so you set the temperature yourself, and into a communal outdoor mineral tub paired with a cold shower for back-and-forth contrast rounds. An infrared sauna rounds out the heat options. This is a soak-and-bodywork spa rather than an all-day bathhouse: you book a timed slot, ideally 48 hours ahead with a card, and arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to check in and change into a robe. The outdoor mineral bath starts around $25 and a private mineral bath around $30, with 30- and 60-minute options, couples baths and discounted 3- and 6-packs; regulars can join the Tub Club from $175 a month. Most guests pair a soak with a massage, facial, mud mask or one of the multi-hour spa-day packages. Swimsuits are required in the communal tub, children under 12 are not served, and 12- to 17-year-olds need a parent or guardian. Mineral-bath cancellations need two hours' notice. People have bathed here for a very long time. The Washoe regarded the springs as sacred, and in the 1800s a hotel, hospital and enclosed steam baths grew up around a geyser said to shoot 60 feet into the air; legend credits Mark Twain with naming it for a column of steam that looked like a steamboat in the desert. In 1925 Dr. Edna Carver drilled into hot water just 18 feet down and turned the site into a health destination along the Lincoln Highway. Today it is run as a nonprofit that is fundraising to repair the snow-damaged roof of its historic building.
