The Spa at CIVANA is the spa of CIVANA Wellness Resort in Carefree, at the far north edge of the Valley where the town adjoins Cave Creek, and its Aqua Therapy Circuit is the most European hydrotherapy setup in Arizona: hot and cold Kneipp wading walks, a warm Tepidarium soaking pool, a cold deluge shower, a waterfall shower and a KLAFS Sanarium, a lower-temperature, adjustable-humidity sauna that CIVANA says is the only commercial one in the country, backed by a conventional dry sauna and steam rooms in both locker rooms. Beyond the circuit is a 25-meter heated saltwater pool, a co-ed relaxation lounge with pod loungers and a deck facing Black Mountain, and more than 23 treatment rooms. Non-resort guests have two published ways in. Any spa treatment includes the hydrotherapy circuit, the pool and the lounge, so a single massage or facial (with a 22 percent service charge) is the minimum ticket. Or buy a Day Pass, which CIVANA's online shop listed at $249 (adults 21 and over): the Aqua Therapy Circuit, the adults-only pool, the fitness center and two complimentary classes. A Day Pass with a 60-minute spa service was listed at $349 and shows as sold out, with day passes offered Sunday through Thursday while supplies last. Day passes are non-refundable, not available year-round and sell through book.civanacarefree.com; the spa itself is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and is cashless. The resort noted a spa refresh over the summer with the circuit staying open. Cold here is the deluge shower and the cold leg of the Kneipp walk rather than a full plunge, so think of it as a long, gentle European circuit with a sauna rarity at its heart, an hour north of central Phoenix.
