The Spa at the Boulders

34631 N Tom Darlington Dr, Scottsdale, AZ

The Spa at the Boulders is the 33,000-square-foot spa of the Boulders Resort, the Curio Collection hideaway set among 12-million-year-old granite boulders where Scottsdale meets Carefree. It was once a Golden Door and later a Waldorf Astoria spa, and the bones are unchanged: a Zen courtyard entry into a round adobe-fireplace lobby, 24 treatment rooms, a tea room, a Spa Café, a meditation labyrinth, a Watsu pool and an adults-only heated spa pool under the rocks. The thermal facilities are in the Niwa locker rooms, a steam room and a dry sauna on each side plus the O'furo, a Japanese-style hot soaking bath; there is no cold plunge. The spa does not publish a day pass or a facility-only fee. The spa pool is stated to be for resort guests or spa-service guests only, and the resort's answer for everyone else is a treatment: 50- or 80-minute massages and facials by appointment, booked online or at (480) 595-3500, with the locker-room steam, sauna and O'furo used before and after. The spa is adults only (18+). Published hours put the spa desk and facilities at 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and services at 9 or 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., though the packages page lists services Wednesday through Sunday, so check the day before you drive up. Prices are on the PDF menu and by phone. It is a destination rather than a quick stop, 45 minutes north of central Phoenix, and the draw is the setting: lounging on the pool deck under the boulders after a soak is the whole point.
